Joe’s Essential Boba Fett Reading Guide

Boba Fett is one of my favorite characters. I’m pretty sure it has everything to do with the first Star Wars books I ever read, which were Tales from the Bounty Hunters and the Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy.

Sure Boba looked cool on screen, but actually get to “see” him in action in the books and comics and get a sense of his personality and demeanor beyond standing around or falling into big holes in the desert was fantastic.

Ever since those four books kicked off my love of  Boba Fett I’ve probably consumed nearly every scrap of content that focuses on him. (A few exceptions would be the young reader novels that focus on young Boba Fett. )

I’m going to detail my personal list of recommended reading for anyone who wants to consume as much of the baddest bounty hunter in the galaxy as they can.

Tales of the Bounty Hunters

I’m almost certain that Tales of the Bounty Hunters was the first Star Wars book I ever read. And while others got their start in the EU with Heir to the Empire, I was immediately drawn in to the stories in this book.

TalesBountyBoba’s tale in this book fills in a little bit of Fett’s backstory, which would later be retconned, since this was published in 1996 before we had any idea Boba was a clone. Even with the inconsistencies with what we now know about Boba’s origins, it still proves to be an awesome short story about Boba’s rivalry with Han Solo.

Tales from Jabba’s Palace

Boba’s bit in Tales from Jabba’s Palace focused on his time spent in the belly of the Almighty Sarlacc, as it did it’s best to digest him. Here we learned more about the nature of the sarlacc, and that it could communicate with it’s victims somewhat telepathically.

In the story the beast trying to break down Boba not only physically but mentally as well.

Another great short story. If you’ve never read these “Tales” books you really ought to.TalesJabba

The Bounty Hunter Wars

I’m pretty sure the Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy were the next things I read after Tales of the Bounty Hunters. Because bounty hunters are the best.

The Mandalorian Armor, Slave Ship, and Hard Merchandise were the three books that made up this awesome trilogy.

Essentially, Boba Fett is contracted to join the Bounty Hunter’s Guild, a long standing organization that Boba Fett loathes and has never joined. But his employer wants him to join the Guild and to take it down from the inside, which he does marvelously by pitting Bossk against his own father. And by being a bad-ass.

Blood Ties Comics

The comic series Star Wars Blood Ties are fantastic. Comprised of two books, Blood Ties, and Blood Ties: Boba Fett is Dead (spoiler alert: he isn’t), the stories focus on Boba Fett and his relationship with the son of a clone trooper: sort of his half brother in a way.

1429537-stars_wars_blood_ties_2I really don’t want to give anything away here, but these books are just absolutely packed with incredibly bad-ass moments from start to finish.

Blood ties even manages to make young Boba seem kind of cool and interesting, something not easily done. Seriously, these two books kick ass.Star Wars - Blood Ties #2 012

Omnibus: Boba Fett

Dark Horse, the previous publishers of Star Wars comics, put out a lot of Omnibus collections before the Star Wars license went back to Marvel.

One of these Omnibi… Omnibuses, Omnibodes… whatever, is only Boba Fett comics. And they’re all awesome.

Boba_Fett_OmnibusThe tales included in this omnibus include Boba’s famous show down with Darth Vader, his face off with none other than JODO KAST, and many many more awesome stories (18 issues worth) all compiled into one convenient book!

Legacy of the Force

Three out of the nine books in the Legacy of the Force series were penned by the phenomenal Karen Traviss. Her books have a large focus on Old Man Boba. If you prefer your Fett to be dark and broody and don’t wanna dig too deep into his psyche and feelings, then maybe you skip these ones.

980799Traviss does a great job of showing us Boba’s insecurities as a failed father and introducing us to his granddaughter, Mirta Gev. Also even though he’s in his 70s, he’s still a total bad-ass.

A Practical Man short story

Also written by Karen Traviss, A Practical Man was a short story that depicts Boba Fett and his Mandalorians fending off the Yuuzhan Vong. This book is the source of the famous (it’s famous right?) Boba Fett quote “You can run, but you’ll only die tired.”A_Practical_Man

The Force Unleashed II Comic

So it turns out that the comic for The Force Unleashed II is all about Boba Fett. star_wars_tfu2_by_omarfrancia-d45xw5o

The comic basically retells the story of the game from Boba’s Perspective. Even though the story in the game (and most of the gamplay) was sub-par, getting another comic story about Boba Fett is always a good thing.

Battle of the Bounty Hunters Pop-up Book

Who doesn’t like pop-up books? Battle of the Bounty Hunters is a short pop-up book about Boba trying to deliver Han  to Jabba.Battlebountyhunters

In the book he dupes multiple IG-88’s above the planet and tricks Zuckuss and 4-LOM down on the surface, successfully bringing Han to Jabba.item126714.5

Star Wars Adventures: Boba Fett and the Ship of Fear

Although it’s a young reader comic, Boba Fett and the Ship of Fear is still worth the read.

In it, Boba is on an old abandoned luxury starship looking for a precious relic. He’s forced to work together with two rival hunters (who happen to hate him) in order to survive when it turns out the ship is filled with EVIL SPACE SPIDERS!SWAdv5_BobaFettShipOfFear

Again, I don’t want to give it away, but Boba once again proves he’s a bad-ass in a number of ways throughout this book.

It’s short, it’s awesome: go read it.

Honorable Mentions

Obviously Boba Fett appears in a lot more than just what I’ve mentioned, so if you’ve read all of the books above and are still craving more of the Fett, check out these books that don’t focus on Fett, but still feature him in varying degrees.

I’m looking for one but I don’t know the name. Boba Fett accepts a bounty on a kid to return him to an Imperial. The entire way to the Imperial the kid is trying to plead his case to Boba. When the bounty is finally complete the boy pulls out a handful of credits to hire Boba Fett to protect him, which he accepts and proceeds to kill the entire Imperial group present. Do you know which comic this is?
