X-Wing Session Report: A look at Rebel Aces

WP_20141013_22_09_14_ProI’ve had Rebel Aces for a while now but I haven’t actually gotten a chance to fly them. A buddy of mine was in the same boat so we decided to go all out aces on both sides.

I wanted to go crazy with the new A-Wing pilots and Nera Dantels seemed like a fun pilot to try out.

Initial thoughts about the pilots:

Nera Dantels

Nera-dantelsI can’t really say… I had Advanced Proton Torpedoes and Flechette Torpedoes on her and never got to fire them. I could’ve had an A-Wing dead to rights but I got greedy and tried to wait for a shot on Keyan Farlander. He somehow managed to either bump me, or stay at range two the entire time until he had me trapped in the “death box” pictured below.

WP_20141013_22_43_12_ProThat poor B-Wing in the middle is Nera. RIP.

Her ability seems cool. Probably is. I just couldn’t fly her well enough.

Although, a new discovery is that Adrenaline Rush is a great choice for a B-Wing. Getting an action after pulling that sexy 2 k-turn is wonderful.

Keyan Farlander

Keyan-farlanderKeyan did a lot of work for my opponent. His ability is definitely extremely powerful, especially given the precedent set forth by the Garven Dreis Act of 2012.  His ability ended up doing most of the work, with Kyle Katarn on board not doing much to help.

I did notice something neat with Kyle on a B-Wing. Use advanced sensors to take a target lock or some other action, use Push the Limit to take another action, get a stress, then reveal a green maneuver and you get a free focus just for removing your stress. Not bad.

Jake Farrell

Jake-farrellJake was awesome. And to that point, Proton Rockets were awesome on him. Using his ability I was able to take a focus, and then boost into range 1 of the Blue Squadron Pilot, and then land five hits! Putting Push the Limit on Jake just opens up more options for crazy maneuverability.

Proton-rockets

Unfortunately Jake was left alone after his teammates died to take down Keyan, and two Prototype Pilots. He rolled blanks defending against a range 3 shot from one of the A-Wings. Sniped.

Gemmer Sojan

Gemmer-sojanI think Gemmer was my favorite of the new pilots. He’s probably not the best, but he was fun, which is what I want out of X-Wing. If you’re afraid of the dice, you don’t want Gemmer on your team. He lives or dies by the dice. Fortunately he gets a lot of them. I threw a Stealth Device on him which bumped him up to 5 agility when at range 1 of an enemy. I was not afraid to get him into the thick of things.

Unfortunately Keyan’s heavy hitting knocked out his stealth device, and then…
WP_20141013_22_38_08_ProHe only needed one evade! Just one! But those moments are the some of the best moments in X-Wing so I just laughed at my misfortune. Poor poor Gemmy.

If you’re wondering, I lost. He had two A-Wings each with 2 hull and Keyan who still had 3 shields.

But man, flying those A-Wings was a lot of fun. I’m excited to try them out again sometime.

A-Wings Rule!

NOTE: I goofed building my list. Gemmer should only have been able to have 1 EPT since he didn’t have one to start with. My bad.
